Everex Cloudbook to rival Eee PC
Posted on Dec 10, 07 11:23 PM PDT
The Asus Eee PC is one hot ticket this holiday season, but Everex isn't going to take the situation lying down by unveiling the Cloudbook. This Linux-powered UMPC touts to follow the Eee PC in many aspects, featuring a 7" display, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, wired and wireless Ethernet connectivity, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, 512MB RAM, USB 2.0 and DVI-out. It ditches the Eee PC's solid state drive and 900MHz Celeron processor in favor of a 30GB hard drive and a 1.2GHz Via C7 ULV processor. The Everex Cloudbook is tipped to ship this January 15th, retailing for $400. Which will you side with?

I personally like the idea of the touchpad thingy being in the top corner. i would think that once you got used to how to use it, it would be like a second nature...what i DON'T like about the touchpad is the size. i think it would have been a lot better to have one of those tiny joystick type things that you see in the dell latitude and lenovo thinkpad. i would like to see that in the same location as the touchpad on the cloudbook

Cloudbook or Eee?.... the Eee hands down. Smaller, sexier, touchpad is where it should be. As a second computer and one that is ultra portable and fully functioning, its perfect. In fact, i use it more than my mac these days. Did i mention that i think i'm in love with it? - Black 701 4G - truly magnificent.

Touch pad looks much less convenient than on the EEE PC. I'm going to wait a few months after it's released to see about the ease of use with the touch pad. Part of having a very small notebook is being able to put it in your pocket without a bunch of accessories, like an additional mouse, when you're on the go.

I generally agree with the comments posted here. The specs make it a very nice little machine.
Except for one thing. IT HAS NO RIGHT HIFT KEY in the keyboard.
I mean is Everex crazy? This one, eazily fixed thing totally ruins the cloudbook for me.

Well I like the idea, will it be available in the UK. If the eeePC had a 30gig drive I would have bought it. But this fits my bill, mostly because it has a 30gig hard drive.

not half chick as eee. appearance also matters. bigger, heavier, less battery life...

Kooder, can you post a link to the "announcement"? This was first posted by linuxdevices.com on Dec 9th, as a "leak", but if there was a prior announcement, we would like to see it and link to it as well. Right now, I don't think that this was announced a long time ago, but I have no problem correcting the info, if it was. Thanks!

Yes, this was announced long before the Eee. people who write columns have to fill space.
Touchscreen will be introduced when gOS supports it. Too bad not SSD.

If the screen was a touchscreen and could fold backwards to be used like a pad, that would rock.

Judging from the dimensions relative to the 7" screen, the cloudbook is significantly larger than the eeepc, hm? So, bonus: larger keyboard; crappus: larger laptop. And I can't imagine for the life of me trying to use a touchpad that's above the keyboard.

I would stay with eeePC, the design of this Cloudbook isn't that nice (imo), escpecially horizontal hole between monitor and keyboard part.. also eeePC weight (900 grams) and size - is good selling point. People travel a lot nowadays and eeePC is all traveler needs.

Just so people know, this is a rerelease of the Packard Bell EasyNote XS computer that is available in a few other countries. It is being manufactured and distributed by a different company (or so I've come to believe, correct me if I'm wrong), and is not exactly a new computer. I've seen a lot of headlines for this recently saying that it's a reaction to the eeePC, which (also from my research) seems to predate the eeePC. The original one by Packard Bell, however, is a Windows XP equipped computer, this one is a gOS (linux based) computer, which probably saves on some costs.

one of the selling points of the eee pc is the SSD .. no moving part . and with regular 2.5 hard drive it will likely weight at least 2 lbs .... and the battery life, i would assume might be comparable, The only advantage to the cloudbook, would be the DVI output, and if the 7" screen was capable of a larger res of 800x480 .. which is doubt able ..

Touchpad is above the keyboard. Unusual location caused by the fact that the VIA Nanobook reference platform was originally designed with a touchscreen instead.
