PS3 update 2.1 and PSP update 3.8 are live
Posted on: December 17, 2007

The PSP update 3.8 that we talked about recently is now live. With this update, Internet radio, a TV guide and TV recording become possible (TV functionality requires 1Seg TV Tuner)
Also, the PS3 update 2.1 is also available. It adds DivX and WMV compatibility to the PS3. That’s not it: this update will also bump the Blu-Ray profile to 1.1.
“Profile 1.1 (also called the Final Standard Profile or "Bonus View") adds decoders for secondary PiP video and audio, plus 256 MB of local storage capability” (from highdefdigest)

Good Job :). So your son tried to smart and wanted a PS3 with US price to play European discs :)). I'm thinking the same, by the way. Since you have nothing to loose try to update your US PS3 with the 2.10 update from Hong Kong. They have a mess there in terms of TV standards, that is why they use both PAL and NTSC formats. THe HK update might serve your purpose. Good Luck and let me know the results.

Hi,
I bought my little bro a PS3 80g in the US (we live in Ireland) before Xmas as a gift. It had being working perfectly but the other day, he updated the software (to 2.10) how it could play the Divx…… However, this update resulted in the PS3 not loading or recognising the games discs since!!!
Obviously, not great news! I’ve tried resetting to factory standard but I understand that this will keep the latest firmware as the firmware is the flash memory. I think it could be that it loaded a European update to a US PS3??? Can anyone help?? Can the firmware be downgraded somehow?

Its about time a psp update comes with stuff i can actualy use on my psp. I dont own a ps3, and all the updates that added more and more co-op between them and nothing for me only made it hurt worse that I dont own one.

Nice update to be fair, it came just as i was becoming frustrated with the data corrupted error and well, now i can watch my vid's without a problem. Good job sony.

I prefer smaller updates, less wait time, don't mind updating once a month or so. Besides, I can use the time that it's taking to install divx to re-open nero home to stream to my ps3....maybe it will finally work like it's supposed to.

Different users have different needs. I use my ps3 mostly for video, so in my case, this update is critical and much anticipated. I personally enjoy the fact that the system recieves updates frequently, atleast new features are added without a long wait.

No, it is much better to get the updates in installments rather than gigabytes of updates every 3 or 4 months.

That is an extremely underwhelming update for both systems. I can't play Team Fortress 2 right now because I'm waiting an hour and a half for WMV and DivX playability on it? Ridiculous.

I own a ps3 and a psp, but im not happy wit all the updates, they shouldnt update a playstation every 4 weeks, you should gather all the updates ur thinking of doing to the ps3 and do it all in 1 hit....
