LG 4.8-inch UMPC - Wow!
Posted on Jan 8, 08 01:13 AM PDT

This 4.8” Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) from LG is quite interesting. It looks a little like the OQO. It connects using HSDPA (or WiFi), runs Windows Vista and it is reasonably fast for productivity apps like email and web browsing. It is built on Intel’s Menlow platform for UMPCs. There are two USB ports, so connecting an external keyboard should be easy. Why an external keyboard? Because the integrated keyboard is not comfortable.
Other than that, it is a cool device and I hope that the pricing is right. LG has plans for Europe, Asia and Canada, but nothing for the U.S at this point. More specs in the full post
- 4.8” Touch Display (854x480)
- Intel Menlow platform
- 1GB RAM
- 40GBHDD
- 590g
- 148x92x292mm

LG will NEVER listen to suggestions. Trust me, I've tried.

this device would be perfect with an ssd drive and ubuntu mobile. Why use the new intel chips with vista; it does not make sense. Also it seems impossible to contact LG and do soe suggestions. Perhaps they do not like suggestions?...

It looks completely identical to the nokia n810 in screen and keyboard layout and the hardware probably will cost 3 time as much.
And you can wake up the linux tablet inn one second.

Maybe because for some people don't want of linux ?
And you can still put linux on it if you want...

This device has a soft sleep mode that allows you to trigger a 1% battery usage per hour. This means you can boot the machine and then sleep until you need to use it. Then recover from sleep is within 5 seconds. Vista has its problems but for a mobile device it's perfect. Clear visually crisp and media concerned OS is exactly what all remote devices are attempting to achieve. LG here have a winner on their hands. A VERY BIG THUMBS UP!!

It all depends on what applications one wants to run. The OS is a secondary consideration, in my opinion.

Windows vista is definitely the wrong choice for a umpc. For a fully installed machine with apps, antivirus, antispyware and firewall installed, tt will take >5 minutes for the device to finish loading all the OS junk and scans for virus etc on bootup - much too slow for a mobile, and wastes battery power. Linux will be the better choice.

Why oh god would you use vista on such a light platform ?? Why not go for Linux ?
