HP Pavilion HDX 20.1-inch Notebook

[CES 2008] We would rather call it a desktop replacement: with its 20.1” display, the HP Pavilion HDX is impressive at first sight. Playing with it, we liked a few things in particular:

Display: the dual hinge provides better ergonomics. The screen can be higher and closer than on a typical notebook.

Sound Quality: the sound was amazingly good… I was going to say “for a laptop”. Amazing for a laptop, but, absolutely good.

Of course, you are not expected to move this notebook too often, but for someone who wants the power of a desktop and the integration of a notebook, this is a serious option. Specification in the full post.

Highlights

  • 20.1” (1920x1200) display
  • Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme
  • GeForce 8800M GTS 512MB
  • Blu-Ray and HD-DVD support (it’s not clear if it’s a combo-drive)
  • Altec Lansing speakers (4)
  • TV Tuner
  • Integrated Remote Control (removable)
  • Adjustable Webcam
  • HDMI port
  • eSATA port
  • $2000

Check the HP site. As of today, you can now get the GeForce card.

I think I read that we will not be able to order the revised HDX with the new x9000 CPU and 8800 GPU until later this month.

I've been trying to decide on a new machine, and the HDX is really starting to look appealing. The one thing I'm concerned about, however, is the graphics card.

From the HP website, you cannot customize the HDX with any graphics card other than the 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT. However, this review, as well as another article I read elsewhere, both seem to indicate that the HDX can come equipped with the superior GeForce 8800M GTS 512MB graphics card.

If the HDX can, indeed, come equipped with the GeForce, then I'm sold. I contacted an HP Helpdesk assistant, however, and their response seemed congruent with their website:

Agent: "I am very sorry but you can not customize the notebook with the Nvidia GeForce 8800M graphics card."
Agent: "You can customize it with only 256MB ATI(TM) Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 2600 XT graphic card."

So which is it? Can you or can you not get the HDX with the GeForce card. If you can, then where can I get mine? :D

$2000 does seem cheap comparing what you will get for it
