Lenovo Ideapad Y510, Y710
Posted on: January 03, 2008

[CES 2008] Lenovo (ex-IBM) is usually synonymous with very good quality business laptops with a boring (but efficient) design. Lenovo wants to change that and the “Idea” brand is how the company intends to enter the consumer market (which is where the money is). Here’s the line-up.
The Y510 seems like the laptop for the average user. It’s good for emails, web browsing and other non-intensive tasks, but could not be a gaming machine, because of the low-end integrated graphics from Intel.
The Y710 is beefier, first of all because it has a 17” display, but also because it has a faster CPU (2.5Ghz), more storage (2 HDD bays) and has an entry-level GPU that is capable of mild gaming. More specs in the full post.

- ATI Radeon HD2600 256MB
- Optional HD optical disk
- 500GB HDD (2 drives)

Is the microphone integrated like the webcam? I know there is also an outlet for a microphone as well? But is there an integrated microphone as well?

You can get 4hours with screen on lowest brightness, WiFi off, volume on mute, quiet mode, and programs that require little processing power like MS Word. But 3hr 20min is my average.

I love this computer. One thing people need to know is that any software they add on need to be stored on the D drive as the C drive is only allotted minimal space. The screen is not nearly as bad as it's being made out to be. Unless you are aiming the screen into direct lighting the glare factor is hardly a bother. My only complaint with the Y510 is that the microphone is weak and playback of audio from the mic is barely audible. I think thre was way too much negative hype from the "experts" about this laptop before they actually had their hands on it. You'll see what I mean when you read various reviews and see they are all repeating what someone else has said. It runs cool and I use a 2 fan chill pad so I doubt it ever needs to fan up. The battery life is not as good as I've seen it reviewed. In reality you would have to urn the bright down almost completely and not use anything to make it past 3 hours. I have tried 4 times and have not reached 3 hours yet. On average I am getting about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Over all this is a great computer and you can't beat the price. I paid $529 after rebates. I would recommend it highly.

The Y710 is a nice looking machine I have had mine for two weeks and put it through the paces..The video driver crashes alot and the number pad is bouncy. seems as if it is just a snap in with poor fit. The shiny surfaces make it a real finger print magnet. The sound for DVD movies through Media Player is low,had to add windvd to get better volume..The sub system is a joke...but Im trying to get use to the machine now, ordered more memory to boost it up to 4gigs,and ordered second hard drive of 250gigs.
Over all nice looking laptop, but Wish it performed better.

I have had the Y710 for about 3 weeks and love it. No issues what so ever. The screen is beautiful and very sturdy. This computer is built very well; very solid. I upgraded from a Dell Insiron 9300 and I have to say that the Y710 puts in to shame. I would recommend this computer to anyone.

I am using Y510 for two weeks now. As a budget laptop this is a great purchase. Good and strong design. Great performace. It is never hot. 4.1 sound is fantastic. This is a good purchase for a budget minded customer. Thanks Lenovo for the nice product.

It seems like the Y510 would be a very good option for those budget wise people like myself. But reading comments from people your right just look at the specs and the price from that alone you can tell it's not a gameing machine as most $700 to $900 laptops are not. But either the Y510 or Y710 would be a good choice for web development, with the wide screen and the nice bright display.
Just my thoughts.

I've seen several versions of the Y710 - one with the numeric keypad and one with the gamepad. Are the two swappable or is the gamepad only for the newer versions of the Y710. I prefer to have the model with the numeric keypad.

How's the glossy screen? The CES photos make it look awful.

This looks pretty good, just seen the review and not a minute later, got an offer on my mailbox ;)
With a T2330, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, Dual Layer DVD RW @ 649 (after 50 rebate) at tigerdirect, so I bought one, I'll let you know once it's here.

that doesn't mean the Y510 can't run older games like the original Halo to Quake 2
