Palm Retail Stores to Close

Guess Palm will be going the way of HD DVD in due time, with word on the street saying that Palm will soon be folding all but its airport-based retail locations by the end of this month. Forum members who can't quite believe this news have also taken the initiative to check with their local stores in order to verify this piece of news, and apparently it is as accurate as a rifle in the hands of a trained soldier. Do you think this is the death knell of Palm? Is there no way back for this once glorious company?

Let's not overstate things. You refer to Palm as a "once glorious company." It has never been "glorious" at any time. The PDA was a great idea, and Palm managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of certain victory time after time. The retail stores were only the latest debacle in their sad history. The selling off of the Palm O.S. was another. The persistent problem with quality of products (anybody ever seen a Palm with WiFi--or a Treo--that actually, um, er, WORKED?). The unwillingness to build a decent support system. The failure to provide updates to long-standing problems in firmware and the Desktop software. In short, the greed of the executives who focused on their compensation instead of customer satisfaction has progressively eroded the trust the market has in their products. Palm has been mismanaged ever since Hawkins left (the second time).
