Samsung BD-UP5000 Discontinued

Looks like it is really game over for HD DVD as Samsung has just announced that it will discontinue its BD-UP5000 hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD player. This unit was actually one of the most powerful players ever to come out from Samsung’s stable, featuring 1080p, HDMI 1.3 and an Ethernet port. Unfortunately, it seems that many users did report problems such as the inability to run HD audio codecs as well as proper viewing of some discs among others. Word on the street has it that the BD-UP5000 will be discontinued as early as this May, with a replacement due in the second half of the year. I wonder – with the dwindling share of HD DVD in the market, it is viable to come out with a hybrid player?
