Everex gPC mini against Mac Mini?
Feb 26, 08 04:19 PM PDT

It is true that these two could be potential arch-enemies, but the thing that annoys me the most is that it would not have cost a whole lot more to get a decent, not great, but *decent* design for the Everex computer (yes, I dislike the bright patch on the front). Couldn’t they make the whole thing black? It would have been even less expensive to produce. Question: do Linux users care about design? Add a comment below.
I like the form-factor of these small computers, but unless I can turn them into media centers (the TV Tuner is missing) or unless I want to do a crazy mod, I’ll just skip for now.

gPC mini does not have enough RAM. They should have put atlest 1GB for $499.

MythTV frontend, here I come!
So jay doesn't think that Linux is a "real" OS? I have been using Kubuntu since 7.04 for a MythTV server (backend / frontend / desktop) and on a separate frontend in the bedroom. It does the job, and my recordings are plain mpeg, no DRM. Can your "real" OS say the same?

since it does have firewire/1394 it should be possible to use mythtv to control a cable stb (motorola 62xx or sa3250hd) and also capture video via firewire.
w/ dvi/s-video out you shouldn't have issues feeding either an newer hdtv or even an old crt.
the processor is a little sluggish for hd but should be fine for sd. i'd definantly back it up with a more powerful mythtvbackend... and i believe the chipset should support XvMC which might help in the graphics performance also.

The Mac Mini also has a remote and iLive....besides a real OS. You can have s-video our on the Mac with the adapter....
have no idea what the wireless capabilities of the everex are... oir bluetooth... both present on the Mac mini.
for 799 you get the 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM 120GB Serial ATA drive and SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

Mac mini is beautiful (no doubt Apple is the best for design), has a faster cpu, more ram...as it's a mini pc I don't really care of the smaller hdd, maybe I could only feel the lack of the dvd burner. In conclusion, I'm not keen on Apple products, I just think the gPC is nice, but a bit overpriced (well and even if I don't think it's ugly, I agree they could have made it all black ;)). Btw, nice comparison!
