Samsung To Double Flash SSD Capacity
Posted on Feb 24, 08 07:49 PM PDT

Samsung looks on track to double its flash SSD capacity before the year is over, claiming that a 128GB version will be shipping this third quarter while a 256GB version will probably appear shortly thereafter. The price will definitely be astronomical, but it bodes well for uber-thin notebooks such as the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 and the MacBook Air. Chances are the 256GB model will utilize Multi Level Cell (MLC) storage that is more sluggish compared to a Single Level Cell (SLC) drive, but it has advantages of stacking multiple bits of data per cell to reduce the overall cost of the disk. I guess we'll be seeing more slim notebooks being released next year (although affording one of them is another can of worms...).
