University of Wisconsin Sues Intel for Patent Infringement

The University of Wisconsin believes that the Intel Core Duo processor infringes on a patent that was developed by a professor there. The research on parallel execution of instructions was presented to Intel in 1998 in a proposed licensing deal, but Intel did not choose to license it. The University of Wisconsin believes that Intel is currently using their research in the Core Duo processor and is filing a lawsuit, asking for money and a halt in processors shipment (probably as a way to pressure Intel to give the money).

I’m not a lawyer, but I would be surprised if the University wins: there are many ways to implement a concept and that makes it hard to prove whether or not there was intellectual property theft – if indeed, there was any.

I expect to see the new Noyce-Moore Engineering School being dedicated in Madison in the very near future.

True, but who thought Amazon would win a lawsuit over the one-click purchase...but they did. Don't rule out the University, really stupid things happen when attorneys get involved.
