PeioSim For Budding Dentists
Posted on Mar 23, 08 07:19 PM PDT

The PerioSim is a dental training simulator for budding dentists, making me wonder whether the Nintendo DS' Trauma Center kicked off this idea in the medical world. In this simulator, arealistic 3-D human mouth is shown in real-time, where the user will be able to adjust the model position, viewpoint and transparency level accordingly. A haptic device is used to send feedback of actual sensations in the virtual mouth, doing away with the need for an actual human guinea pig. Instructors will then be able to recreate short scenarios of periodontal procedures such as the removal of wisdom teeth, and these procedures can be saved and replayed at any time for future reference. Too bad the simulator does not pump out noxious gases to help dental students come to grips with bad breath on patients.
