Sony Ericsson Z750a
Posted on Mar 31, 08 06:36 PM PDT

Sony Ericsson has rolled out the Z750a, making it the first 3G/HSDPA handset for the US market to date. This affordable and stylish handset features a reflective mirror clamshell case, complete with a hidden OLED reflective display screen in front which illuminates discreetly whenever there is an incoming call or message. I love such displays, and they have been used in previous Sony Walkmans thus far to great effect. Other features found on the Z750a include :-
- 2 megapixel camera
- 3G connectivity
- AT&T Mobile Email application support
- 26MB internal memory
- Memory Stick Micro slot
- 3D gaming capability
- Bluetooth connectivity
- 2.2” QVGA 262k Color TFT display

I've had the phone for about 3 weeks and I definitely notice the short battery life. At first I figured it was from all the pictures I was taking not to mention the messaging, but now I see that it is losing charge with simple everyday use. I have to charge this phone much more often than my old nokia. But, I love the phone, I just make sure to charge it daily!

God it's unbelievable how lazy people are. I've always charged my phones & BT headsets in the past every evening when going to bed. No problems. I love this phone. It has everything I've wanted or needed, and if you go with unlimited data (which by standards is cheap now adays...$15.00/mo/line) you can't go wrong with streaming video, etc. Think of what you pay for a gal of gas today, this phone is definitely worth every .01 spent. And gee...when you buy a blackberry, heck yeah I'd expect to get all the goodies w/it considering the price. Spend a few bucks and get the accessories for this phone...well worth it. I love sitting by the pool and listening to "XM" radio and regular FM tuner. Stop being so critical of "lazy-man" features it doesn't have. Gee, I've got to walk to my mailbox everyday...hmmmm...wonder if I can get a gadget to take me there & back...LAZY!

Can someone who ahs this phone please tell me - when you get an incoming call, does the NAME/caller ID show up in that narrow little display on the outside? I'm just making sure because I'd hate to have to flip it open to see who is calling.

I gave the SE Z750a the better part of a month to make itself useful and just could not get it to perform. Perhaps I ask too much. It seems to me that the features should be reliable and useable. But these took far more time to make work than was worthwhile. And at the end of the month no improvement was in sight. What I need is a phone that can keep my hands free and quickly switch back to the radio or pod-casts or music while I work or work out or hike. A camera is nice but I generally have a better camera handy. Why not have a single audio unit for phone and ipod and radio so I don’t have to change earpieces? How hard can that be to make? A phone is already a radio receiver.
G3 internet streaming promised XM radio and Mobiradio and MobiTV and a raft of bling applications to rack up extra monthly costs. Cellular Video (CV) seems to be a separate streaming function with rather poor audio quality. Of all the streaming services MobiTV seemed to perform the best for me although I did not give it much trial. It played at a very high, clear volume which was unfortunately not effected by the volume toggle. Mobiradio was the most promising because it had twice the number of channels as XM (50) including NPR. However I could not get the volume above a faint whisper barely suitable for a silent, still room. One time it took about five minutes before audio came thru to the bluetooth. Another misbehavior was that it played the audio from one channel (NPR) while displaying the song and artist from a music channel. XM radio sometimes had decent volume but not always and it skipped out frequently for a second or up to about thirty seconds.
The 2 GB card seemed like a fine prospect but the management of its content was cumbersome to impossible. The media player did play my files sometimes but they seemed hard to control and later would not play them at all. The menu scrolled thru them and did not stop until it got to the AT&T jingles which it played over and over. Clicking “resume” just brought up and “access failed” sign. When the files were started from another route they stopped when the phone was closed. It didn’t seem like carrying the phone around open was going to work for me.
The play/pause button on the side kept changing functions erratically. Sometimes it would conveniently start and stop the media player and run the audio files from the phone or memory card and sometimes it would stop media player but not start it again. Sometimes it started the audio file title scrolling across the screen without playing any audio at all. Someitmes it switched the audio from the media player to the FM radio. Sometimes it had no discernible effect. Sometimes the pause/play button produced a screen that read “Continue playback thru speakers?” Pressing “yes” or “no” on this screen usually seemed to have the same zero effect except that sometimes “yes” started the media player.
Indeed feature failure was the most common feature. At times the volume toggle did nothing for the volume or anything else even after I learned that a steady press was not effective and multiple presses were.. The “activity” or shortcut key also failed often to have any function. And when it did bring up the option to close media player and mobitv the soft “end” key would then close media player but not mobiTV. Two of the Sony Ericsson technicians told me to get a new unit because of this and the first time I did trade it in but the replacement did not perform better. The other time I wondered if a reboot would help and it did. Also a Master Reset helped it once- for a while. At one point there was no audio on Voice Mail. I could see the voice mail seconds ticking away but could not hear it thru the speakers or either headset. This also baffled the technician I called. She said that AT&T has an issue with accessing voice mail but she had never heard of an absence of audio after connection was made. Two other techs told me to get a software update but that I could not do it from my mac. I would have tried it but my 30 day trial ran out and my patience was close behind.
The FM radio is my most necessary feature and the Z750a had good reception and good sound quality and acceptable volume. About the only problem was that it would not play over the stereo blue tooth even with the corded headset plugged in to be the antenna. If the phone had not been advertised with MP3, XM, G3 internet and stereo blue tooth I might have kept it. But I would rather not carry around fancy features that do not work. Better to stay with Verizon an pay $40/mo less. One very nice feature that I have appreciated very much on my Nokia and Motorola FM phones was actually better on the Z750a. That is that the headset cord often kept the phone from crashing to the ground because it was hooked on pretty tight. It was also very handy as a tether to pull the phone from my pocket. The Sony Ericsson cord plug promised to perform this very useful service better than any of my previous phones and so I may seek another SE. Although the Motorola cord worked this way also it was less effective than the Nokia. It was frustratingly prone to coming loose because it extended out about an inch and was very easily knocked out requiring me to stop work and plug it in again. Someone will make this plug so it does not extend outside the phone body and cannot be knocked out. Then the phone will hang conveniently from the neck and ride just inside the top shirt button. Earphone cords will then be short and bluetooth will be an unnecessary energy drain. Another thing I missed on the SE is the stubby antenna from my Motorola and Nokia because it doubled as a convenient handle to pull the phone from its belt case.
There were some other frustrations with the Z750a systems. It was difficult to tell if a message went out via email or text message without asking the recipient. Information screens sometimes disappeared so fast they could not be read such as when making an entry into the address book. Some menu items or names in the address book scrolled annoyingly and unreadably across the screen rather than waiting for a command or taking another line. This was especially annoying as much of the screen real estate was just wasted space. (Although it is a brilliant and bright and high resolution space) I would much rather have these behaviors customizable than having a blingy custom background or ring tone. Also the center button is recessed and very delicate and hard to touch without triggering some navigation key instead. Frequently I had to change hands and use various fingernails at precise angles.
The battery lost about 80% of its charge with about three hours of steady bluetooth use for XM including one phone call of about 40 minutes. The BT powersave was on.
Given all this trouble I am sad that the phone was so unusable. It had many charming qualities such as the big clear screen and mirror finish exterior and a fairly stable rest on the desk to use with one hand. The alarm was relatively easy and the calls list was much, much better than the Nokia in that it can be sorted by ”all” calls as well as “in”, “out” and “missed.” I like to have access to a large history of calls but did not get around to finding if the Z750a does that. My Motorolas had only a pathetic ten call memory. It also had an inferior text writing system compared to my Nokia. I could not determine if the SE text writing system is really easy and useful or not but it seemed that with a little practice it might be very good.
Who knows of a good music phone with FM radio on any carrier?

Is your bluetooth on? That tends to run down a phones charge.

I got this phone last week, and so far I have only recharged it once, and that was today.
Only bad thing about the phone that I can see, is the fact that the menu system is slow, that is not usual to SE phones. Could that have to do with the AT&T software in the phone?

I got this phone about a week ago, the only problem is finding accesssories, the data cable, the headset to listen to the radio, etc.., car charger!! I changed the Blackberry for this phone because of the small buttons, the only thing the Blackberry came with all the accessories!!!

I got mine saturday afternoon and it was fully charged. Now it's only Tuesday and I'm recharging it for the second time since I got it. That's three charges it's burned through in three and a half days... Has anyone else noticed a short battery life? Like, little more than 24 hours? I don't want to have to charge this thing every single day. Can I get a replacement battery for it?
