Treo 800w Not Available Till Summer
Posted on Mar 21, 08 10:17 AM PDT

Palm might have sold a truckload of Palm Centros (and then some) over the past quarter, but they are still in the red, posting a loss that amounts up to double digit millions. The company doesn't look any closer towards the road of recovery with news that the Treo 800w will not be available for EV-DO networks till summer rolls around. Summer isn't exactly that far away, but everyone knows that timing is everything and this could be a crucial moment for Palm. Will you be getting the Treo 800w when it is released, or are you past the Palm phase already?

As a former BB 8830 user, I was frustrated searching for a Windows Mobile device that I liked. (new employer only supports WM for full syncing with email, calendar, etc.)
I settled on a Samsung i760 with a slider but am not completely sold. I think the Palm 800w might do the trick when it comes out. I really want the wi-fi capability and a full keyboard on the outside.

Not a chance. Do the math: 300 bucks for the phone (based on current 700w MSRP), Minimum $40 voice and another $40 unlimited data, and it costs you $1500 for two years. And it runs Windows?!?!?! No thanks. If I want to spend that kind of money, I'll get an iPhone for $400 plus $60/month for service, including data. That's the same cost as the Treo (a few bucks less, bu why quibble?). And it runs OS X!!!
That's a no-brainer.
But being the frugal (cheap?) type, I think I'd just get a low-end free phone with a basic plan, and then buy an iPod touch for 300 bucks. Add the 30 bucks for a cheapo plan, and it's just over a grand for two years. The only thing I'd lose is using the mobile service for web surfing. And if you need to use it that much, check into a 12-step plan, 'cuz you've got a real problem.
Speaking as someone who still uses my Handspring VIsor, and loves it, this phone ain't gonna save Palm. They should be spending every last penny of development on their new OS. Once they (finally) replace the 10+ year-old garnet there might be something to talk about.
