Hitachi Introduces 450GB, 15k RPM Drive

Hailed as an “Enterprise” hard drive, this type of HDD is indeed very fast (and noisy). That is why enthusiast consumers use them to build high-end gaming rigs or video-processing computers. Anyhow, Hitachi claims that the Ultrastar 15K450 offers up to 30% performance improvement over older models. The other good news is that it has lower power requirements.

- 16MB buffer
- 3GB/s using SAS
- 4GB/s using FCAL
- 250G shock tolerance
- 3.7Bels acoustic output (idle)
- 4 Platters

That's disgustingly fast. Too expensive for me, but you can bet if I had money to burn, I'd RAID 0 these right quick. It may be for enterprise, but, still...
