USB Devices Killed By Vista Update
Apr 16, 08 12:30 PM PDT

Microsoft has finally come out of the closet, admitting that a recent Windows Vista security update has caused havoc with selected USB devices. Unfortunately and true-to-form Microsoft style, the cock-up has yet to see a fix in any form. Windows Defender's update last week have left certain users extremely unhappy as their USB mice and keyboards seem to go on a strike and refuse to function after the update is installed. Have you been affected so far? If so, kindly leave a comment below and what you did to get your USB device up and running once again.

Been using Vista for like a year now, never had a problem.... One morning I boot my laptop and USB Mouse / Keyboard fail to work.... Even my 500 Gb IOmega External HDD doesn't work.... Tried all da c**p things -- regedit / uninstall + allow self location in safe mode / removing battery + removing mains to remove static + kept laptop switched off without any power for 10 hrs + blowing air and cleaning / format and reinstall.... No chance !!! After the format and fresh install of Vista, it started working for 20 mins ; I had to reboot ; after I restarted, back to square 1.... MS and Bill Gates are pieces of s**t !!!

I downgraded from W2K to Vista. The vesion I got came with SP1. My router is a Maxon BP3 USB unit. In the 40 odd days of using Vista I have had to reboot several times a day in order to restore the internet connection; scoured the web, no fixes any where, never had a problem with W2K, just got greedy.

Yup; exact same issues here. And it's not like we're warned in any way that the issue exists. I can't believe that in all the time this issue has existed, Microsoft hasn't even come out with a hotfix patch. That's pretty sad. I've always been mildly disappointed with MS, but this is a new low of customer alienation.

Yh, still after 4 months Microsoft haven't released a fix??! My new usb HP mouse and logitech speakers will not work on the laptop that has the update, but work perfectly with my mum's laptop (that is exactly the same as mine) that does not have the update... Tried everything.

Based from your guy's post...after the latest update it left most of your usb devices broken. What I experienced was that anything I plugged at my VISTA machine it doesn't work before it used to work. But my devices are still working. The basic function of usb is to make easy connection from other devices but this is not so. I hope that Microsoft has solution on this as soon as possible this is not good.

Both my mouse and Keyboard were usb (my computer don't have ps2 ports) and I couldn't do anything. I finally had to restore back to a date before the patch was pushed down. I has to copy the drivers back into c:windows/inf ins safemode. Then I installed sp1 manually. So far its still working but I will not turn automatic update on again.

to SD: if you flash drive doesn't work on any PC, it simply tied, it would have happened in any PC you plugged it in, it simply was its time to fail

I am running Vista 32 Enterprise edition on a Macbook Pro and all of my external hard drives work and my Nikon D200 will work directly plugged in. USB Flash drives don't work though. This drives me nuts. USB mice have even worked but not USB Flash Drives and I have some Windows software that uses an iLink USB Flash drive in order to run the application.
P.S. If you have a Mac Laptop DON'T uninstall USB drivers because the Trackpad and Keyboard are all connected internally via USB. If you uninstall hoping that it will reinstall when you reboot you will be horribly frustrated when you try and log in to your profile and the keyboard doesn't work. The only fix I had was to reinstall. Please save yourself the headache.

Wireless keyboard and mouse failed last night after the latest automatic download. Ironically they are both Microsoft as well. Amazing what little use a PC is without a keyboard.

I am continuosly getting a message at about 1am everyday that all of a sudden will popup and tell me my USB devices will perform faster if connected to a USB 2 port? Then Vista starts to install drivers for all my USB devices. I go into Device manager and update the driver for my USB2 Host controllers with the Intel version and Vista begins to reinstall all the drivers for my USB devices again and things are back to normal. Somehow Vista is automatically updating the USB2 host controller drivers with the Microsoft version at around 1am every day!!!

Broke my USB Mouse. Been using it for years; hours after plugging it into a Vista machined the mouse stopped working. Now it doesn't work on any computers - XP or Vista....

I have to use upadtes in Vista selectively. Some updates have disabled my monitor on bootup. Also SP1 disabled my DVD/RW Drive and naturally TV Card.It probably did more but I uninstalled it obviously. What is it with Vista?! These is the dark days again.

Broke Logitech mouse, but left Seagate HD alone. I've scoured the internet for days looking for a work-around, so far no luck.

The upgrade seems to have blocked active syncing between my Moto Q and outlook 2003.
By Jen , 16/04/08 1:09 PM (CommentID #635515)
Broke every USB related devices which did not have manufacturer's own driver i.e. devices which uses MS default drivers.
So far, all external hard-disk, flash memory drive and standard HP mouse all refused to work post automatic update. Have not try anything too drastic like restoring as I need the laptop for the next few weeks and can not risk that remedial action will render computer unusable. I am hoping that the automatic update of SP1 will resolve this issue. Finger crossed.
