Self-Mounting Wheel Chair
Posted on May 5, 08 10:11 AM PDT
Researchers from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, US, has hooked up with a company called Freedom Sciences of Philadelphia to demonstrate the Self-Mounting Wheel Chair which enables users to dock the wheelchair onto a forklift themselves, thanks to an on-board computer that utilizesa LIDAR (light detecting and ranging) system to position the chair. This system bounces laser light off two reflectors on the armrests of the chair to track its position and align it with the forklift. There is a 97.5% success rate when docking the chair despite running into obstacles such as rain, headlights, visible exhaust fumes, or loose gravel under the wheels during testing. A failed docking attempt will see the operator reposition the chair and try again. This system is tipped to retail for approximately $30,000 a pop when available.
