Trekkie Tricorder Invented
Posted on May 2, 08 05:42 AM PDT

Star Trek tricorders are now actually in existence and no longer remain in the realm of imagination, thanks to the resourcefulness of Trekkie fans. The invention uses readily available off-the-shelf cell phone technology, featuring handheld medical scanners hooked up to standard cell phones that will be able to show what ails you from a single push of a button. This makes medical care in rural areas much easier, as these devices can soon "find their way in ambulances, or rural clinics", according to Boris Rubinsky, a professor of bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley. When a portable scanner plugged to the cell phone, the latter will transmit raw scanning data to the processors in order to create images that relay back for viewing on the handset's display.
