3G iPhone frenzy is a worldwide phenomenon, basically any country selling it will see hardcore iPhone lovers forming lines outside stores days before the actual launch. It is the same with Japan's Softbank Mobile stores, as the main building in Tokyo already has at least 20 people waiting in line before it is officially released. The first person is Sano, a 24-year old computer science student, who won his place there simply by winning a rock-paper-scissors game with the rest of the group. While the rest of Japan's phones are highly sophisticated, it is the full software suite of the iPhone that attracts buyers. I'm sure a waterproof version will do phenomenally well in Japan, properly modeled or not.
