RFID Swallowed in the Name of Science
Posted on Jul 29, 08 10:59 PM PDT

Benjamin Franklin went to great lengths for science, putting his life at risk by flying a kite during a thunderstorm, but you don't have to perform such daredevil stunts these days. A group of walkers have volunteered themselves (and their stomachs) by swallowing an RFID pill so that scientists will be able to monitor body temperature. Each of these pills will record and transmit the walker's core temperature to a receiver located in their backpack at intervals of 10 seconds. This data will then be set to a GPS-enabled phone through Bluetooth, where the operations center at Radbound will filter through all the collected data to alert individual walkers should their temperature hit a dangerous level.
