Infinite Storage Capacity for iPhones

Both models of the iPhone come with 16GB of storage space at best, but we have come to hoard plenty of media files that will easily outstrip what is on offer in due time. Apple hopes to change that by working on an infinite storage capacity solution for both the iPhone and iPhone 3G, enabling heavy-media users to store their media not on the iPhone, but on a server somewhere, where this media is streamed in real-time from desktop iTunes libraries. Of course, this will take a long time in coming, and what happens when you're in a place where there is no stable data connection? Does that mean you won't be able to enjoy your favorite tunes as and where you want to, or is it a ploy by Apple for folks to accompany their iPhone 3G purchase with a 160GB iPod classic?
