Samsung Targets Low Cost PCs With Low Density SATA II SSDs

Samsung will be releasing its new line of low density SATA II solid state drives (SSDs) that are 70% smaller than today's 2.5" SSDs, targeting low cost PCs. Hopefully this will help drive down the price of SSDs, and that we will see more and more netbook manufacturers pick up this storage option instead of having to rely on hard drives still. I would feel much safer if my data were to be stored on an SSD since the chances of that piece of hardware failing would be lower compared to a regular hard drive. These new multi-level-cell (MLC) SSDs will come in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities. Mass production will begin from next month onwards. The 32GB MLC SSD will feature a read and write speed of 90MB/s and 70MB/s, respectively. No idea on pricing, but hopefully they'll be cheap enough for the masses.
