[DEMOFall 08] There are a few ways to share a ride to work, but Avego wants to push the concept further: by not only optimizing the number of seats available (to maximize a car), but also by computing the fees owed by the passengers to the driver, creating a financial incentive for drivers to get into the system. This could prove to be a key component to shared transportation. See it as social networking meets carpooling meets environmentally friendly behavior. Drivers can make their seats available and define passenger criteria (male, female, member of a community, company, school) on Avego.com and soon from their mobile phones (including the iPhone). In theory, this sounds promising, but it remains to be seen if it will be adopted in mass or if it will remain something that few will choose to use.
