Elephant Sends SMS To Alert Rangers
Posted on Oct 13, 08 11:28 AM PDT

Necessity being the mother of all invention, frustrated rangers have managed to come up with an interesting method that alerts them of elephants attempting to "play" on neighboring farms, thanks to a SIM card that is located within the elephant's collar. Using a certain type of geo-fence and Google Earth, this involuntary SMS system will help preserve farms in Kenya before widespread damage is wrought by a playful elephant. One of the major drawbacks would be limited collar battery life and the need for full-time monitoring - can't they come up with a solar-powered version?
