Vudu Now Offers 1080p Downloads

Vudu has moved on with the times by offering full HD downloads as well as a $200 credit for new customers who sign up for its Internet video-on-demand box. Granted, the number of 1080p movies available for rent at this point in time are pretty small, but as with interest rates at the bank, it will grow slowly over time. There will be 65 movies up for downloads at this point in time, including The Spiderwick Chronicles, Speed Racer, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Chinatown, Saturday Night Fever, In Bruges, The Chronicles of Riddick, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and they will co-exist with 720p HD ones peacefully. Each rental will be anywhere from $4 to $6, and Vudu is also working on updating older HD movies in its catalog to 1080p as well. The main drawback? A 4-hour download time, which means Vudu has tossed out the convenience of instantaneous starts for 480p and 720p movies. Read our Vudu review here.
