Mini Magnetosphere To Prevent Astronauts From Cosmic Rays
Posted on Nov 4, 08 09:36 PM PDT
Anyone who grew up on a steady diet of Fantastic Four will definitely wish they could be bombarded with cosmic rays in order to get superhuman powers, but reality is much less favorable since sub-atomic particles which are abundany in space can slice through DNA like Wolverine's claws through virtually anything, increasing the risk of astronauts (and anyone else involved in space travel for that matter) contracting cancer as well as other medical disorders. A solution has been thought up - using a device that will generate a magnetic field hundreds of kilometers across, around the spacecraft. This ‘Mini magnetosphere’ concept is currently being studied by both the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA with regards to its feasibility.
