Unlocking the iPhone 2.2, Vietnamese-Style

Apple has made it really hard to unlock the iPhone since version 2.2. Unlocking the device would allow the owner to use any SIM card he or she please. A Small shop in Vietnam has an risky approach to unlock the phone: remove the chip and and change the locking setting by reading the chip data to a computer, changing the unlock data and rewriting the modified data to the phone... and re-assembling the phone like it never was taken apart. It's risky for the phone, but it's even riskier for the shop owner Tuan An: if he fails, he promise to give a new phone to the owner. So far, he fried only two iPhones while testing his method. Note: iPhones version 2.1 devices that have been unlocked this way, have to be unlocked again. Future updates can re-lock the phone. The cost of the operation is $80
