Seagate Offers Highest Areal Density Hard Drive

Seagate has taken the throne when it comes to having the world's highest areal density hard drive at 500GB per disk, packing in a whopping 1GB in just two. The model number in question is the Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 HD, a 3.5" 7200-RPM drive that boasts an areal density of 329 Gigabits per square inch, making it the best combination of capacity, performance and reliability for PCs, desktop RAID and personal external storage. It will utilize a Serial ATA 3Gb/second interface, offering users a sustained data rate of up to 160MB/second and a burst speed of 3Gb/second. Folks who don't need that much space and yet need similar performance figures can get it in 750GB and 500GB capacities with cache options of 32MB and 16MB, respectively. There is no word on pricing as at press time.

Note:Samsung offered the F2 EcoGreen 500GB (HD502HI) in Japan sometime last December with 500GB per platter as well, but bear in mind the F2 EcoGreen is spinning at just 5400 RPM here.
