Data Compression Reaches New Heights

The wonders of human ingenuity is apparent yet again with news that researchers have managed to develop a technique that sees 10 trillion bits being crammed onto the surface the size of a quarter. This is huge news, as it will definitely revolutionize the way data is stored and carried around by the masses once a viable manufacturing process is developed and costs are affordable enough. This compression technique is approximately 15 times more dense than what today’s densest data storage device is able to achieve. How is this possible? Self-assembly is the answer, which is the equivalent of tricking the disk’s materials into organizing into an array of data-storing dots that are packed much tighter than what is possible using current techniques.
