Texas Instruments Unleash OMAP4
Posted on Feb 18, 09 04:21 AM PDT

TI (Texas Instruments) will begin to sample its next-generation mobile applications processors sometime in the second half of this year. These OMAP4 chips will come with dual, SMP-capable ARMv7-based cores, C64x DSPs, multi-format hardware accelerators, a "programmable" graphics engine, and an "image signal processor" (ISP). What makes this piece of news exciting is the ability for OMAP4 to record and play back video in full High Definition - yes ladies and gentlemen, that means 1080p video on your cell phone or perhaps even portable media player. What would go down well with this? A portable device with a built-in projector that handles full HD resolution as well - it is a pipe dream in the making and many years away, but we don't doubt the existence of such devices in the future.
