Apple Store Offers Contract-Free iPhone

Folks who want to pick up an iPhone as a standalone unit without the hassle of being tied down to a 2-year contract will be able to do so via the Apple Store. Whereas AT&T already offers such a deal, folks who want to go through that channel had to rely on a limit of one per customer, while Apple doesn't really care how many units you pick up as they laugh their way to the bank. Just as suspected, the 8GB model will retail for $599 while the 16GB model costs another Benjamin more. All these purchases can be activated via iTunes. Unfortunately, you're still stuck with AT&T if you don't want to unlock your phone (and void your warranty).
