NVIDIA GeForce G102M, an 4-15 Watt GPU
Posted on Mar 2, 09 09:49 AM PDT
GPUS are often associated with ideas like "power hog", but NVIDIA knows that the future does not reside in 300 Watts GPUs, but in something more efficient, even if the occasional high-end GPU will indeed be a power hog. At Cebit, NVIDIA just announced the GeForce G102M, a mobile GPU that consumes between 4 and 15 Watts of power. It is paired with 512MB of graphics memory and is capable of 1080p hardware decode.
Asus has announced a K-Series of laptops (14", 15" and 17") that will use the chip. The GeForce G102M is said to be an order of magnitude faster than Intel's mobile solutions. We're confident that it is indeed faster, but we'll wait for independent reviews to know how much faster it really is. Like all recent NVIDIA GPUs, the GeForce G102M is also capable of encoding video faster than mobile CPUs can.
