Game Over For Silicon Graphics

Silicon Graphics (SGI), the pioneer in hardware accelerated computer graphics is selling itself to Rackable Systems for $25M in cash. On the same day, SGI has filed for bankruptcy. Rackable gets Silicon Graphics's intellectual properties for building high-performance computing and storage.
As a computer graphics fan, it's sad to see SGI go away, but clearly when people talk about SGI's legacy being "cloud computing", you know that something has gone terribly wrong. Besides being known for their bad spending habits when they made $4B a year, they simply did not know how to cope with the rise of consumer-level graphics and computers.
A little story about SGI: when they launched the Octane workstation, several caught fire due to an electrical problem. Ironically, the marketing slogan was "ignite your mind". Good bye SGI.
