New iTunes Price Structure Affects Song Popularity
Posted on Apr 12, 09 07:53 PM PDT

It goes without saying that consumers are extremely price sensitive, and the recent price revision of popular songs in iTunes that touched $1.29 saw an almost immediate impact, falling 5.3 places on average on iTunes' Top 100 charts on Wednesday followed by another 2 places on Thursday. In this zero sum game, it was only natural that $0.99 songs rose an average of 2.5 spots on Wednesday and 1.7 on Thursday. Selected cases saw certain songs being booted out of the chart, and nothing has been said on how $0.69 songs are faring. We wonder whether folks who are averse to forking out extra for popular songs might turn to piracy instead.
