Your regular DVD loses out terribly to the Blu-ray format when it comes to storage space, but Australian scientists could turn the tables on Blu-ray just yet by coming up with a multilayer optical storage medium which is capable of handling data at 1.1TB/cm3. This is made possible as multiple pieces of data can be stored in the same location up to 10 layers down, where individual layers feature gold nanorods that have been specially conditioned to work with particular types of light. Guess the lens of such a drive will be mighty expensive, but imagine sifting through 12TB worth of data on a single DVD - we don't know whether to laugh or to cry when you're looking for that obscure file.
