Microsoft Wants To Call Netbook Something Else

Microsoft decides to reinvent the linguistic wheel with plans to redefine the term netbook as a "low cost small notebook PC" - at least that's the impression that Steven Guggenheimer, general manager of the Application Platform & Development Marketing Division at Microsoft, is giving out at Computex. After all, according to Steven, selected netbooks are already doing more than just Internet browsing, which ought to be the main purpose of a netbook, hence the push to abandon the name. We don't really buy such logic - guess we should call computers something else since they do more than just compute these days, and while we're at it, forget about your cellphone - it has way too many functions to be deemed that. This reeks of a strategy by Microsoft to separate the netbooks and mini notebooks that have standard notebook features in order to lower the number of its low-end Windows shipments, in order for folks to adopt the upcoming Windows 7 operating system for a more lucrative bottom line.
