Is this the ultimate touch sensor?

Researchers at the New York University are trying to create a touch sensor that would have the ability to measure how much pressure is applied on multiple contact points. This would likely lead to smarter touch pads first, then possibly better touch screens.

Today, most consumer touch technology can either measure pressure or handle multi-touch but not both at the same time. Pressure-sensitive touch surfaces allow much more natural writing or drawing. It could also be better for gaming activities (think: drumset, virtual piano…). Resistive (non-pressure sensitive) technology can be nicer to use because it requires less pressure to sense a contact. If researchers have their way, we might get the best of both worlds. Right now, their sensor is opaque, but they think that a transparent version could be created.
