Who would have thought that technology would have progressed to such a state where one is able to “wear” a musical instrument on the body? That is what the Aeolia project offers – stretch sensing on the body. This piece was created by Martha Glazzard at Nottingham Trent University, relying on conductive yarn from Bekaert. The effectiveness of its sensors are maximized by careful placement at the elbow and underarm, and was specially comissioned to fit cellist Peter Gregson as he graces New Media Scotland’s 10th anniversary event at the CCA, Glasgow in 2009. This is one of those rare times where you would do better to watch the video and see (hear) for yourself what the wearable cello is all about.
