Symbian to go open source
Posted on Feb 4, 10 03:50 AM PDT

Symbian has finally made the plunge to the world of open source, where folks will be able to download their code without forking out a single cent. This is really interesting, as it would be the rough equivalent (at least for the world of cellphones) of Microsoft making Windows opeen source in a free for all. Despite the age of the Symbian platform, still 40% of handsets out there run on some version of Symbian, so it would be interesting to see what programmers are able to come up with once they let their creative juices get to work. The other thing is this - will people care considering the iPhone OS and Android seems to be the two main contenders in the immediate future?
