Toshiba Gives Up On OLED Mass Production

While the world seems to be experiencing a shortage of AMOLED displays, there is further bad news in the form of an announcement that Toshiba has confirmed that it plans to drop its plans to mass produce OLED displays. Toshiba Mobile Display, together with Panasonic had previously invested a cool $190 million to set up an OLED production line with the goal to produce 1.5 million OLED displays for smartphones per year, though that obviously won’t be the case now. This decision is apparently due to a surge in demand for LCDs this year, not to mention the blow that the company received in the recent financial crisis. All staff involved in the production and R&D of OLED will be transferred to the LCD panel division and the company will focus on doing OLED-related R&D for lighting equipment only. Seems like the OLED woes are set to continue.
