The U.S. government is passing a mandate that all vehicles in 2014 must come equipped with a rear-view camera, otherwise known as a back-up camera. The camera, which would be mounted near the rear license plate, would display video of what’s going on behind the vehicle on a center console display when a driver puts the car into reverse. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this could potentially help to prevent nearly 300 deaths and 18,000 injuries related to backovers. The government will be requiring that 10 percent of vehicles be compliant with 2012 model cars, and 40 percent in 2013, with full compliance with new vehicles by 2014. This would cover all passenger cars, SUVs, trucks, minivans, and vehicles up to 10,000 pounds.
