The Art of Motion Control: Beyond the Hype

[E3 2009] I don't think that anyone had envisioned a post-E3 motion controller war, but that's what's happening in the forums and elsewhere right now. After the cool on-stage demos from Microsoft and Sony, gamers are split on what's "better", Sony's Motion Controller magic wand or Microsoft's full body project Natal. Our first take was that Project Natal was "better, but let's try to go beyond the hype to review how each technology works, how it could be used and which might ultimately win.

Sony PS3 Mod Nation Racers: a DIY Dream

Mod Nation Racers is a cool game by itself, but its customization features take it to the next level and make it very unique. Players can create their own Tracks by simply driving around: the built -in editor will lay out the road in their path. It is also smart enough to arrange a passage when the track intersects itself. It is then possible to add weapons and power-ups, without forgetting the herd of sheeps. Simply brilliant. it will be available in 2010.

Sony Webcam-based Controller Not as Good as Microsoft

[E3 2009] Sony is back with another iteration of their webcam-based controller. As usual, the principle is that you are waving one or two glowvy trackers that the Ps3 can recognize easily. We've seen this before, except that this time, it worked much better than in previous attempts (dating from 2000 or so).

The demo was fun and at time impressive. We liked how accurate this seems to be. Weapons, including arcs or shuriken where demoed, but writing is also possible. A feat usually not so easily done with this tech.

However, Project Natal from Microsoft looked more impressive and does not require special glowy objects. Yet, Sony might get some mileage if this translate to Wii-likegames.
