Gigapixel Digital Camera
The European Space Agency is building a 1 Gigapixel (1024 Megapixels) Digital Camera the the future "Gaia" space telescope. Rather than being one gigantic sensor, it is going to be composed of 170 units. Gaia will be positioned at 930000 miles from Earth and will photograph celestial objects, just like Hubble does, but better. Each of the 170 CCD sensors found in Gaia is ten times bigger than those found in consumer cameras, and that will likely create some manufacturing issues. The project is scheduled to be complete in 2010.
