Skype has confirmed that a mobile version of the internet telephony software will be available this year. With 100 million copies downloaded, Skype is definitely becoming a great way to stay in touch.

If users can actually use a decent internet connection, it will be great. In the meantime, GPRS and EDGE are quite slow. EV-DO might start prove to be useable for VOIP. At the moment, a Wifi enabled phone is the must… if you find a “hotspot”.

The wireless carriers will of course hate this. On one hand users want faster and unlimited data connections, on the other hand they’ll use it to do Voice Over IP. The consumer wins, carriers make less money. Bad for them, but it’s inevitable.
