Japanese researchers have invented a fuel cell that can produce electricity from blood. The initial goal would be to power artificial organs such as hearts.

The fuel cell has the size of a small coin and can generate 0.2 milliwatts of electric power. That’s not enough to pump the blood but it’s sufficient to measure blood sugar levels, for example. Other weird applications could include powering these embedded RFID tags under the skin.

How long before my cellphone starts to feed on me?
