Panasonic is currently exhibiting a prototype e-book reader that displays pictures in full color in Tokyo. The prototype comes with a 5.6” TFT LCD XGA display with an approximate resolution of 210 ppi.
The previously released Sigma e-book has two 7.2” memory-type monochrome LCD XGA panels, and marrying these 2 panels resulted in a smaller and lighter end result. Using a Li-on secondary battery is an improvement over the previous iteration. In order to produce a commercially viable product by July 2006, Panasonic aims to extend the battery life to 6 or 7 hours per charge. Pricing is not confirmed yet, but it will most probably retail for under under ¥40,000.
A video reproduction function is in the pipeline as well, with details on the encoding method yet to be ironed out. Video reproduction function will allow the user to see moving pictures, as well as voice and music. JPEG still pictures can be viewed with the new model, and contents are written to the memory card via a USB port.
