Servinova and Cisco Systems have started to test the Calypso C1250i, a dual-mode GSM/Wifi cellphone that could switch seamlessly between GSM cellular network and Wifi Local Area Network (LAN). Such a phone is very desired by gadget-lovers because it would allow (really) high-speed internet access even beyond what “3G” can offer on the most sophisticated cellphone. The cellphone carriers might also save a bunch of money on infrastructure, as Wifi is much cheaper than GSM/3G to deploy. The things that really suck with Wifi is coverage and ease of connection.
