The Golden Penguin Bowl is where bitter battles are held for geek glory, and this week saw the face off between programmers from Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. Questions ranging from old computer operating systems to geekys ones like the name of the mining spacecraft in the movie “Alien” were thrown at the contestants. Microsoft’s “Nerd” team squared off with Google’s “Geek” squad, with Microsoft’s Rob Curran powering them through sci-fi questions without breaking a sweat. Curran was dressed in full Darth Vader regalia, while his teammates were all decked out as Stormtroopers.
However, Microsoft’s team shot themselves in the foot when they failed to correctly answer when was Windows 1.0 released (it was in 1985 btw). Google took the contest in the end, and it proved a welcome distraction at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, which focuses on the Linux operating system and open source software solutions.
