Japanese electronics giant Toshiba announced the arrival of its first hard drive based on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. This new technology increases the amount of data that can be stored, up to a maximum of 40GB/platter. The MK4007GAL 1.8” PMR drive opens up possibilities for smaller and thinner portable devices in the future.
Toshiba is the current hard drive manufacturer for iPods, and it is possible that they could supply thin, large-capacity PMR drives for future iPods as well. Toshiba plans to introduce an 80GB 1.8” HDD with PMR in the later part of this year.
