A project led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology founding chairman Nicholas Negroponte aims to develop a $100 laptop computer for distribution among schoolchildren in developing countries. This effort has drawn the attention of Google, AMD, Red Hat, News Corp. and Brightstar Corp to pitch in $2 million each. Apple offered free copies of Mac OS X for each computer, but it was turned down due to its non-open source status. A production version currently runs on an AMD chip and a Linux-based OS.
