Lucent goes to court over Microsoft´s Xbox 360

Lucent filed a suit against Microsoft last month, throwing accusations that the Seattle outfit has violated a patent related to the MPEG-2 codec. Should Lucent’s suit prevail, Microsoft could potentially face serious repurcussions as DVD movies and certain in-game cutscenes are encoded in the MPEG-2 format. Xbox 360 need not fret at the moment, as such a suit could take anywhere between 2 to 3 years before entering the trial phase. In any case, Microsoft will most probably settle the dispute with Lucent with cold, hard cash rather than seeing its home console business go under the water after sinking millions into it.
